NCI Expands Conservation Work to Cuenca Region October 2010
Enabling the protection of 75,000 acres in only a couple of years
NCI is expanding its activities to the city of Cuenca and the province of Azuay to increase its support for the conservation of biodiversity, culture and environmental services in southern Ecuador. Vast forests still survive in this region, with abundant biodiversity and high endemism. The initiative has begun with an agreement between NCI and Cuenca’s water supply company, which for the past 11 years has successfully managed the Cajas National Park to provide valuable environmental services, particularly for drinking water. Among the priority projects NCI plans to carry out in the region is the declaration of a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve with the Cajas National Park as a core area; the extension of the park through land purchases and the creation of community and municipal protected areas; and the development of municipal conservation mechanisms with local government agencies such as ordinances that would allow for the declaration of municipal, private and community reserves with mechanisms for environmental services payments. We hope these programs will enable the protection of 75,000 acres in only a couple of years
