New Executive Director Strengthens Long Term Sustainability of PROCREL Conservation Program in Peruvian Amazon January 2010
PROCREL has already helped to protect nearly 4.5 million acres of pristine forest
One of NCI’s most successful programs has been the ambitious Program for the Conservation, Management, and Sustainable Use of Biological Diversity in the Region of Loreto (PROCREL) that works to conserve the extraordinary biodiversity of Loreto – Peru’s largest department with 92 million acres of Amazon forest. The program has already helped to protect nearly 4.5 million acres of pristine forest in three newly declared Regional Conservation Areas, and has also helped to improve the livelihood of the local people by developing a number of sustainable income generation programs. One of the objectives of our work has been to transfer capacity to the Regional Government headed by President Yvan Vasquez. Recently, the program achieved a milestone in this regard, with the first Executive Director hired by the government – Cristina Lopez Wong – who most recently worked with NCI as part of the PROCREL support team. This hiring is a great achievement for the regional government, PROCREL and NCI's work in Loreto, and will help to further cement PROCREL’s long-term sustainability in the region. Together with several other members of the PROCREL support team that are now regional government, NCI, the Institute for Investigation of the Peruvian Amazon and other regional partners will continue to work towards the conservation and sustainable use of the biodiversity in this stunning region.
