Protecting Threatened Coastal Areas
February 2009

One of the largest populations of waterfowl on the Peruvian coast

NCI is promoting the establishment of several coastal-marine conservation areas in the Piura region covering an area of over 173,000 acres in association with the regional government and with funding support from the KfW Bankengruppe of Germany. The region includes a number of seasonal and permanent wetlands, an island, and large areas of threatened mangroves, scrub brush and desert. Several Important Bird Areas defined by Birdlife International are also located within the region, and the area has been designated as a regional and national priority for conservation. One of the largest populations of waterfowl on the Peruvian coast, plus a host of migratory species can be found here, and the confluence of the cold Humboldt Current and the warm El Niño Current during the summer months results in an exceptionally high diversity of marine life. The area is home to the endangered Humboldt penguin and threatened green sea turtles, which NCI has helped to conserve over the last year through a National Geographic project. NCI will also be promoting an educational campaign in the region including the production of informational posters and brochures in addition to a photography exhibit. Currently these areas have no formal protections under Peru’s National System of Protected Areas, making prompt conservation actions a priority.
